Jeff,
Yes, the oils have gotten better and so have the parts they are designed
to protect.  Unfortunately the brass synchro rings in our cars are
vintage 1960's and are damaged by sulfur additives in gear oil in spite
of what your mechanic says.  The Valvoline 50 wt oil you are using does
not have sulfur additives so you will be ko.  In fact I seem to recall
that some of the literature that came out when our cars were new
recommended using that sort of stuff in gearboxes.
