I'm not a lawyer, but did take some business law courses.  My 
interpretation is that a verbal agreement is just as binding as
a written contract, just harder to prove intent.

As to getting in hot water by posting on the net, it think it 
all has to do with how you present it.  My suggestion would
be to almost write it exactly as Joe and Trish did, telling
what happened without any judgement or slander. THEN, ask the
list if we can help locate this person because you want to
try and get in touch with them and have not been successful.
So, to do this you'd have to state their name and any other 
relevant info you have.
