I've been told that it's important to stop the water before shutting the
engine down or while cranking, but otherwise it doesn't seem to be a
problem. GM even used it on the aluminum Rover motor in Oldsmobiles, so it
must not be too harmful. (Although they did have a lot of trouble with that
setup, IMO it was primarily due to trying to turbocharge a motor with 10.25
compression ratio.)
However, I have read that it's prudent to watch oil temperatures, and change
the oil more often if it doesn't get hot enough to boil off water
contamination.
