This is a bit off point, but relevant in that you cannot ignore unintended 
consequences:  during the 70s fuel shortage, conservation groups opposed to 
racing  said the real reason racing should be banned was not because of fuel 
consumption by race cars (since we had deflected the first challenges to the 
Indy and Ontario 500s by triumphantly telling the world the cars ran on 
methanol, not gasoline), but the gas burned by spectators getting to the 
race.  Fortunately the wheels fell off that argument when it was agreed that 
restrictions would be equitable only if they applied to all sporting events 
including football, baseball, basketball and horse racing.
