Dan,

Go for it! 580 miles is nothing. In 1987 I drove my 69 510 to Vancouver
Canada taking a route north of the great lakes. Total distance of about
7600 miles. In 1988 I drove the same car to the east coast, about 3800
miles in total. Apart from the burned wheel bearing in Regina Sask on
the first trip I can report NO major breakdowns. No minor ones either.
I consider the wheel bearing incident to be my own fault since the wheel
and tire combination had too much offset and caused an improper load
on the bearings. They looked cool though. Different wheels and tires
for the second trip.

Speaking of road trips there was also the Mexico City run in 1993. We
drove the punkin, an orange 1975 Datsun 710, approximately 6000 miles
on that one. At the border crossing in Detroit they turned us away
stating that we would only be allowed passage into the US if we were
carrying $1500 CASH "for when the car quits and you have to buy a decent
car to come home in." After a month of cruising "the zone", aka Mexican
traffic, we had to change the air and fuel filter for the return trip.
$15 NP. Woohoo! $5 on repairs. Damn, should have gotten the windshield
replaced while we were there, $120 NP or about $40.

See all of these cars on my home page. The butterscotch 510 is also mine.
I bought it last weekend. Is there an S.P.D.A. out there? If there is
I would like to sign up.

Society for the Preservation of Datsun Automobiles. Maybe this list
qualifies.
