Yes you can and it's also approved by the almightyTUV in Germany. The speed
rating of the tire is
reduced down to the next if a "rope" plug is used.
If it's patched from the inside they say the tire
is as good as before.

That's true for 98% of the Miata owners. Many
of them never wash their cars here.
