Joe, et al,
The key is that height of the rollers is just slightly
less than diameter. The torque is transmitted from the
outer groove face to the inner (or vice versa, depends
on accel or deccel) by roller faces. If the rollers
were all the same direction, then only 2 grooves would
be carrying the load at accel (or deccel), but by
alternating them it engages all 4 grooves.

Might have been a 'running change' based on wear
experience in the field.
