They are still around, using the new freons.  You can find them advertised in 
the kit car magazine.  Cost varies greatly depending on how you want it 
configured.  From I think about $300 for one that hangs under the dashboard to 
$800 for one that mounts in the heater box.  Not sure how that would work with 
a Spitfire.

JC Whitney used to offer aftermarket a/c kits.  Does anyone know what ever
happened to these, or did they go to the wayside when they switched
refrigerants?

I have seen air conditioning installed in a Spitfire, and it worked well.
Many years ago I took such a Spitfire out for a test ride.  Alas, my
mechanical skills were minimal, so I elected to purchase another more
reliable car instead.  I really wish I had purchased that Spitfire, as it
was quite unique (unbeknownst to me at the time).  It had a leather interior
and I believe 4 wheel disc brakes, as well as that air conditioning.  God
only knows what else it had.
