I've had the same experience with my '74 TR6.  When I purchased this car it
had the rocker oil kit already installed and the engine spat blue smoke
terribly and consumed quite a bit of oil.  The engine is high mileage
(130,000) and the I'm sure the valve guides are quite worn.

After removing the rocker oiler kit, the oil consumption dropped
considerably and the blue smoke was greatly reduced.  After I rework the
head (new guides & valves), I plan to reinstall the oiler and see how it
works out.
