A overlap is better if your welding skills are not fully developed.  This way 
only one edge is exposed during welding.  The down side is that both sides 
must be welded or the back sealed  to prevent water from rusting the joint.

The butt weld is more difficult to weld since you are welding two edges ( the 
metal tends to heat up and melt faster from a edge) It is also more difficult 
to cut the metal to fit, the tighter joint you have, the less difficulty you 
will have welding.
