Rumor has the the Southern California design team had a  '60's Lotus 
Elan to play with.

Rather think Triumph GT6.  It is really easy to misidentify an old 
Nissan Patrol for a Series Land Rover 88 at first glance.  And there was 
a Datsun roadster based upon the Triumph TR4.

On the other hand it looks like the TR2-3B could be a size and cost 
reduced style look alike from a XK120.
