I have a total rat Spitfire myself, and fearlessly enter it in shows. I
encourage people to sit in it, explore it, and enjoy it. It really makes
some folks day to actually sit in a car at a car show. Watching someone
getting that first time feel of a british car, man, that's something to
watch. Doesn't matter if they're 12 years old, or 96. Depending on the
show we might even go for a ride, and they might drive it.
Since I tend to haunt the same shows year after year it's become quite a
popular car. Other regulars at the shows know it and know me. So it's
nothing unusual for me to see the car across a field with another
participant sitting a person in my car, or opening up my bonnet to show them
things.
Maybe if my car was a priceless treasure I'd feel differently about letting
people enjoy it so intimately, but I hope not. Oh sure, I've found my
steering wheel sticky with ice cream before. And I check around under the
hood to make sure everything is ready before I start it up and drive home.
But I don't mind. Not at all.
I keep meaning to make a nice sign that says something like "hop in" or
"come explore".
