My response to Jon may have suggested that I don't think bodywork and
unvented wheels can be a sidewind problem. I DO know that can be a serious
problem-- I just think it is not a reasonable explanation for the rules Jon
is referring to (although I wouldn't be surprised if it is the official
"excuse" for those rules). And I don't think it is a significant problem on
the "riceburner" sportbikes we were discussing.
Along with what you are saying below-- I have a friend who purchased a Fat
Boy about 3 months ago. I stopped by his house and was admiring those
really great-looking disk wheels. "Want 'em?" he said. "Comin' off next
week, when my new billet spokes get here." Turns out several of them had
gone cruising through the Texas Hill Country the previous weekend, and he
was constantly struggling with the crosswinds!

Interesting reason, but as a street bike rider, I can
understand it. I have a friend that bought a new Indian Chief
with the huge retro front fender, and he complained often
about getting blown all over the place on the freeway. This
has also been reported by HD Fat Boy riders with the solid
front & rear wheels. BTW, trivia question of the day (yeah, I
know this is Turk's schtick), How did the Fat Boy get it's
name? (You Jap bike riders will love this ;-) )
