You know, it is a shame when someone does really well and comes in first on
the first day of an event but can't compete on the second day. With our
current two-day event system that person would be out of luck and we could
argue that the person who ended up winning would have a rather shallow
victory. These are all true and good points.

Unfortunately trying to remedy the situation by taking Randy's suggestion
leads to more problems. What happens to the consistent performer who places
second on both days? He is punished by receiving a 3rd place trophy!!! He
only got to compete against 2nd place on one of the two days. How do we know
he would have lost?

A two day event is all about consistency. Reward the folks who perform well
on both days. Perhaps we can figure out a way to give recognition for each
day individually without taking away from the high overall scorers for the
entire event.
