Not track width.  Weight.

But the 48-spoke design was marginal even on the TR3.

Our TR4 came new with 48s wearing old tires.  One of the first things I did was 
replace them with new Dayton 60-spokes and fresh tires.  Never been sorry.   I 
can feel the difference.
