A can of gloss black krylon will work wonders.  I did this myself a few
weeks ago.  It looks great, and even stands up to TX heat.  A model builder
buddy told me they make that magnet stuff ready to take paint easily on
purpose.  I was afraid the paint would crack or something when the magnet
bent.  No such trouble there either.
